Profile

Dr. Ian Chan joined the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in 2004 as the Deputy General Director of the Electronics and Optoelectronics Research Laboratories (EOL) and became the Vice President and General Director of EOL in July 2007. An expert in cutting-edge semiconductor technology, Dr. Chan is specialized in the design and production process of high-speed semi-conductor materials, microwave circuitry, micron technology and flexible electronics.

Self-disciplined he is, Dr Chan is strict in operating the organization and even works hard for he believes that one must gain a complete understanding of the task. Contributed by Dr. Chan’s leadership, Optoelectronics Research Laboratories (EOL) has build up many outstanding performances in technology research and also created good partnership with international prestigious companies, organizations and universities since 2007. In 2008, he led the AC LED research team to win the R&D100 Award. Multilevel sub-10 ns RRAM as next-generation random access memory and high resolution 56” large-screen 3D LCD display were also developed in the same year. The flexible speaker (FlexpeakerTM) further won Reddot Design Award and The Wall Street Journal Technology Award in 2009. In 2010, one other great honor came from R&D 100 to glorify the excellence of i2/3DW, The Next-generation 3D Display Technology with Integral 2D, and 3D for the Naked Eye and Micro-Deformable Piezoresistive Sensor (MDPS) received a runner-up award in the Semiconductors category from The Wall Street Journal Technology Award.

He has also explored many overseas business opportunities for ITRI by cooperating with IBM, SONY, Kodak, Qualcomm etc. in a variety of technical fields, including memory, semiconductor, and 3D Display, and many more.

Dr. Chan was in charge of flexible electronic projects and was involved in the construction of Taiwan’s first flexible electronics pilot lab when he assumed Deputy General Director of EOL. In 2006, he received the Optoelectrical Communications Science and Technology.  His thesis Prize is from The Far Eastern Y.Z. Hsu Science and Technology Memorial Foundation for his groundbreaking work.

His expertise in semiconductor technology is well recognized, so Dr. Chan has been invited to administer several national projects and played important role among them:

• Recruiter for Taiwan’s chip systems sub-tem project
• Project Recruiter for Taiwan’s nanotechnology project
• Case Director for flexi-electronic industry

Dr. Chan is also appointed as a consultant for some of the biggest names in Taiwan’s companies, including: Delta Corp., Cyntec Co., Cartaiwan Co. and Aegis Semiconductor Technology Inc.

At present, Dr. Chan assumes the chairman of the Flexible Electronics R&D Union and the secretary of Taiwan’s Optoelectronic Semiconductor Association. He holds the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan and M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from National Tsing Hua University. He assumed the director of the electrical engineering department at National Central University from 1998-2001 and currently serves as a professor of electrical engineering. In addition, Dr. Chan has been appointed as the editor of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 2005. He has published more than 100 technical journal papers in prestigious journals and speaks regularly in various industrial conferences and technical symposium.
